Known as the Johnson Hagood Stadium Area at its inception, downtown Charleston’s West Side neighborhood is situated west of King Street and above the Septima Clark Parkway (also known as the Crosstown). Congress Street serves as the area’s northern boundary. Recognized as one of Charleston’s transitional areas, the West Side has seen plenty of renovations and redevelopment in the last few decades.
Most of the homes are traditional, modest-sized Charleston singles built in the 1930’s as the area was infused with New Deal funding, the dump in the vicinity was closed and marshland was filled. Once a primarily African American neighborhood, the area is now home to an eclectic mix of young professionals, families, old-time residents and college students.
