If someone says they live in the City of Charleston, they could live on the historic downtown Charleston peninsula, but the municipality also includes Daniel Island, West Ashley and James Island (at times). Downtown is the urban heart of the city with homes featuring distinctive centuries-old architecture. You can walk to almost any destination downtown.
During and after WWII, the area grew, thanks to the opening of the Naval base, giving birth to the suburbs of West Ashley and James Island. Many homes in these areas were built between 1945 and 1970, though West Ashley also boasts a newer section above I-526. Home building in upper West Ashley began in the 1980’s and continues to present. Even though it is governed by the City of Charleston, Daniel Island is not adjacent to downtown. It is the newest part of the municipality, a planned community built in the 1990’s-present.
