Situated off Savannah Highway near the Ashley Bridge that connects West Ashley to the downtown Charleston peninsula, the 374-home planned neighborhood of Byrnes Down was established in 1945 to serve Naval Shipyard employees. The brick cottage-style homes are framed by tree-lined streets and wide sidewalks, giving the area a strong sense of community. The homes were originally built as 800-1,200 square feet residences, but many have been expanded to up to 2,000 square feet. Widely accessible, Byrnes Down is close to not only downtown, but also Interstates 26 and 526. The West Ashley Greenway runs through the neighborhood, and grocery shopping, numerous eateries, banks and other shops are within walking distance of the community.
